Today, we are going to take a look at OCZ's latest mainstream, high performance solid state drive, the Vertex 2 E, the model we have for review is a 120GB variant featuring the Sandforce SF-1200 controller which promises 285/275 MB/Sec read and writes respectively, and OCZ claim up to a whopping 50,000 IOPS for 4K writes!Solid State Drives have come a long way in the last couple of years, with Intel keeping a firm reign on the market with their M-Series drives. These drives did well, largely because of their ability to cope with high amounts of random reads and writes, completely dominating the other drives out there. The other big contenders were the Indilinx Barefoot controller based drives, they were (and still are) capable of highly respectable random read and write figures, but their main downside was that they suffered from a large drop in performance after certain scenarios of heavy use and had to be fixed with a proprietary software application (wiper.exe). Later firmware updates saw the performance increase and the addition of TRIM support, however, the performance was still falling short of those pesky Intel drives. Enter the Sandforce controller.
