AMD has faced more than its share of hard times. In the world of the CPU they have been consistently behind their rival Intel since the launch of the Conroe CPU. However, as with all things, change is in the air. AMD has taken an interesting approach to what could very well be a comeback. They pushed forward with a performance leading Radeon 5xxx series and recently rounded out that line up with the HD 5830. Now that they have the GPU market firmly in hand they have shifted to the Chipset. They are now launching a chipset that promises to be an excellent tier in AMD’s product offering. This new chipset is the combination of the 890GX and SB850. It brings SATA 3.0 into the chipset with a full six ports instead of the two that a present on current Intel boards using the Marvell controller. AMD has also apparently dropped the use of PCIe 1.0 as the 890GX uses only PCIe 2.0 lanes.  Today we take a look at one of the first 890GX boards to come out. The Asus M4A89GTD Pro/USB3 to see if this new chipset can really bring more speed and power to the AMD line. What’s new?We mentioned above that the new 890GX chipset has brought SATA 3.0 into the chipset. This was accomplished by the move to all PCIe Gen 2.0 lanes. This doubles the bandwidth per lane from 250MB/s to 500MB/s allowing the SATA 3.0 controller in the SB850 to run at full speed without the need to any bridging or hacks. This move also allows the NEC USB 3.0 controller to operate more efficiently than on the Intel H5x and P55 boards.  AMD has put what appears to be a good deal of thought behind this new design and with this move they are forcing Intel to play catch-up on their Socket 1156 based boards.
